When it comes to American media, there are six corporations that control the media we see every day. And while these media giants control the content we see, they don’t always control how we see it. And that’s where other technology comes in.

For decades American families everywhere relied on nationwide cable and satellite radios to get the latest information and entertain themselves. But now that the internet has rapidly developed at our fingertips, it is now a huge factor in our media consumption. From streaming services, to electronic accessories, to gaming consoles, many major corporations have taken advantage of these new mediums.

Which ones are trying to cover the most ground? Let’s take a look.

Amazon

I can confidently say that every time I get in my car and drive anywhere, there is a 95% chance I will see an Amazon van at some point along the way. Amazon has dominated the market of online shopping first and foremost, but they have also made a huge impact on modern media.

Some of Amazon’s most notable products in media include the perks of having an Amazon Prime subscription or using an Amazon Fire Stick.

When Amazon Prime members pay for a monthly or annual subscription they can use Amazon Prime Video and Amazon Music. These are branches of Amazon’s streaming services that consumers can watch movies, watch shows, listen to music, and listen to podcasts on.

Amazon also makes nifty gadgets such as a Fire Stick to also assist with these services. A Fire Stick is a device that can plug into most televisions and essentially turn it into a “Smart TV”. This plug-in device gives your TV the ability to download different applications for web browsing, streaming, and casual gaming.

Amazon also has other smart home products such as the Amazon Alexa.

Google

Google has been taking a similar strategy to Amazon in regards to their products. While Google doesn’t have their own streaming services, they have similar services like YouTube TV and Google Stadia. Google also has a rival version of Amazon’s Alexa, which is a smart speaker called the “Google Home”.

However, what makes Google dominate a huge territory in the world of media is by its original service: an internet search engine. Anything and everything can be found on Google, and it is typically the default search engine on most major web browsers. This means that Google can also potentially be a big distributor for the controlled media online.

Spotify

Spotify is one of the most noteworthy music streaming services. Its obscurely personalized algorithms and seamless functions have attracted 124 million paid members by the end of 2020.

While Spotify is known to be a free app on most mobile devices it is also starting to be installed into newer cars. This can influence people’s podcast and music consumption in a place no other distributor has before, while driving.

As time goes on, media is going to transition in different ways, but major corporations are going to do everything they can to get the audiences’ attention.
